대명사 : 지시대명사의 용법에 대해 알아보기

오늘은 지시대명사 this(these), that(those), such, same, so의 용법에 대해 알아보겠습니다. 지시대명사는, 대명사 중에서 사물이나 장소 등을 지시하는 대명사이고, 사물을 가리키는 이것/그것/저것, 무엇, 장소를 가리키는 여기/거기/저기, 어디 등이 모두 지시 대명사입니다.

this(these), that(those)의 일반적 용법과 관용적 용법

● This is larger than that. (이것은 저것보다 더 크다.)

 

● I will see you again one of these days. (가까운 시일에 다시 만납시다.)

 

● Prices were high in those days. (그 당시에는 물가가 비쌌다.)

 

● He is always quarrel with this man or that. 

(그는 항상 이 사람 또는 저 사람과 말다툼한다.)

 

● Heaven helps those who help themselves.

(하늘은 스스로 돕는 자를 돕는다.)

 

명사의 반복을 피하기 위한 대명사

 

 

1. that of ~, those of ~ (앞에 나온 명상의 반복을 피하기 위해)

● The climate of Korea is milder than that(= the climat) of England.

(한국의 기후는 영국의 기후보다 더 온화하다.)

 

● The population of China is much larger than that of Korea.

(중국의 인구는 한국의 인구보다 훨씬 더 많다.)

 

● The ears of a rabbit are longer than those(= the ears) of a fox.

(토끼의 귀는 여우의 귀보다 더 길다.)

 

● The houses of the rich are larger than those of the poor.

(부유한 사람들의 집은 가난한 사람들의 집보다 더 크다.)

 

2. this나 that이 앞 또는 뒤에 있는 구, 절, 문의 내용을 가리킬 때

● To be or not to be : that is the question. <that은 앞의 to부정사를 가리킴>

(사느냐 죽느냐, 그것이 문제로다.)

 

● The difference is this : her shock was greater than his. <this는 뒷 문장을 가리킴>

(차이점은 다음과 같다. 즉 그녀가 받은 충격이 그의 충격보다 더 크다는 점이었다.)

 

● He said nothing, and this made his father very angry. <this는 앞문장을 가리킴>

(그는 아무 말도 하지 않았다. 이것 때문에 그의 아버지는 매우 화가 났다.)

 

● He makes mistakes, and that very often. <that은 앞 문장 전체를 가리킴>

(그는 실수를 한다. 그것도 매우 자주. [실수를 한다.])

 

● He left suddenly, and that without saying a word. <that은 앞 문장을 가리킴>

(그는 갑자기 떠나 버렸다. 그것도 말 한마디 없이. [떠나 버렸다.])

 

3. that / the former / the one - 전자,  this / the latter / the other - 후자

● Work and play are both necessary to health : this gives us rest, and that gives us energy.

<this = play, that = work>

(일하는 것과 노는 것은 둘 다 건강에 필요하다. 왜냐하면 후자(play)는 우리에게 휴식을 주고 전자(work)는 우리에게 활력을 주기 때문이다.)

 

● A girl and her mother were coming : the one was twelve and the other (was) thirty-five. <the one = A girl, the other = her mother>

(소녀와 그녀의 어머니는 오고 있었다. 전자(A girl)는 12살이었고, 후자(her mother)는 35세였다.)

 

● I love Tom better than Jane, because the former understands me better than the latter.

<the former = Tom, the latter = Jane>

(나는 제인보다 탐을 더 사랑한다. 전자(Tom)는 후자(Jane)보다 나는 더 잘 이해한다.)

 

● It is difficult to distinguish the former from the latter.

(전자와 후자는 구별하기 어렵다.)

 

 

4. Those who ~ : ~한 사람들, He who ~ : ~한 사람.

● Those who help others will be helped by others.

(다른 사람들을 돕는 사람들은 다른 사람들에 의해 도움을 받을 것이다.)

 

● He who doesen't work hard will not succeed in life.

(열심히 일하지 않는 사람은 인생에서 성공하지 못할 것이다.)

 

지시대명사 Such, Same, So

1. Such의 용법 

: such는 원래 형용사이지만, 지시 대명사의 용법도 있다.

 

① such가 단어, 구, 절을 받는 경우.

● He is a child and must be treated as such. <such = a child>

(그는 어린아이므로 그렇게(어린아이로) 취급되어야 한다.)

 

● She is not happy, only she seems such. <such = happy>

(그녀는 행복하지 않다, 단지 그렇게(행복하게) 보일 뿐이다.)

 

● Wealth as such doesn't matter much. <as such = in itself(그 자체로서)>

(재산은 그 자체가 대단히 중요한 것은 아니다.)

 

● I may have offended you, but such was not my intention. <such는 앞 문장>

(내가 네 기분을 상하게 했을지 모르지만, 그것은 내 의도가 아니었다.)

 

 

<형용사로서의 such>

② such that (=such ~ that = so great that) : ~만큼 ~하다.

● His behavior was such that everyone disliked it.

(그이 행위가 너무도 심하여, 모두 그를 싫어했다.)

= Such was his behavior that everyone disliked him. <보어 도치구문>

= His behavior was so great that everyone disliked him.

 

● The heat of my room is such that I cannot study in it.

(내 방의 더위가 그 정도여서 [내 방이 너무 더워서] 나는 거기에서 공부할 수 없다.)

 

③ such + 명사 + that  = so + 형용사(부사) + that : 너무 ~ 하므로

● He had such a fever that he nearly died.

= He had so feverish that he nearly died.

(그는 너무 열이 심해서 거의 죽을 뻔했다.)

 

● This is such a light stone that everybody can lift it.

= This is so light a stone that everybody can lift it.

(이것은 너무 가벼운 돌이어서 모든 사람들이 그것을 들어 올릴 수 있다.)

 

④ such A as B (= A such as B) : B와 같은 A

● Such poets as Milton are rare. (밀턴과 같은 시인은 드물다.)

= Poets such as Milton are rare.

 

● I don't like such people as those.

(나는 저런 사람들을 좋아하지 않는다.)

 

● I've never seen such an exciting game as this.

(나는 이처럼 재미있는 경기를 결코 본 적이 없다.)

 

⑤ ~ , such as : 가령, ~과 같은

● Autumn gives us fruits, such as pears, persimmons, and apples.

(가을은 우리에게 배, 감, 그리고 사과 같은 과일을 준다.)

 

⑥ such as : ~할 정도로, ~와 같은

● His illness is not such as to cause anxiety.

(그의 병은 걱정할 정도는 아니다.)

 

2. so의 용법

: so는 원래 부사이지만, 지시 대명사의 역할도 합니다.

 

 

① 가. So(=yes) + 주어 + 동사 : 역시, 과연 그렇다.

    나. So(=also) + 조동사(be동사) + 주어 : ~도 그렇다.

 

● A : He is rich. (그는 부자다.)

  B : 가. So he is. (정말 그렇다.)

       나. So is she. (그 여자도 역시 부자이다.)

 

● A : I am pretty. (나는 예쁘다.)

  B : So am I. (= I am pretty, too.) (나도 예쁘다.)

 

● A : You are pretty. (너는 예쁘다.)

  B : So I am. (= Yes, I am pretty, indeed.) (그래, 나는 정말로 예쁘다.)

 

② so는 대명사로 do, say, tell, speak, think, suppose, imagine, hope, believe, expect 등의 타동사와 목적어로 쓰이고 있음.

 

● Is he a liar? - I think so.

(그는 거짓말쟁이이니? - 나는 그렇게 생각해)

 

● She must look like a pretty girl. - Yes, I imagine so.

(그녀는 예쁜 소녀처럼 보일 것이 틀림없어. - 그래, 나도 그렇게 상상이 돼.)

 

● Do you think that he will succeed? (당신은 그가 성공할 것이라고 생각합니까?)

- Yes, I hope so. (예, 그러기를 바랍니다.)

- No, I'm afraid not. (아니, 그렇지 않을 것 같습니다.)

 

③ 보어로 쓰일 때.

● He had seen weak, but he wouldn't be so any longer.

(그는 허약해 보였었습니다. 그러나 그는 더 이상 그렇지 않았습니다.)

 

● She is ill, and she thinks herself so.

(그녀는 아픕니다, 그리고 그녀는 자신이 그렇다고 생각합니다.)

 

● If planes are dangerous, cars are much more so.

(만일 비행기가 위험하다면, 자동차는 그것보다 훨씬 더 위험하다.)

 

3. the same의 용법. (same에는 항상 the가 따름)

 

 

① 대명사로서 '동일한 것, 동일인'의 뜻으로 쓰임.

● Everybody said the same. (모두가 똑같은 말을 했다.)

 

● He called for the same again. (다시 한번 같은 물건을 주문했다.)

 

● We must do the same. (우리는 같은 것을 해야 한다.)

 

② the same ~ as와 the same ~ that

: 일반적으로 the same ~ as는 동일한 종류를 나타내며, the same ~ that은 동일물을 가리키나 반드시 지켜지지는 않습니다.

 

● This is the same watch as I lost.

(이것은 내가 잃어버린 것과 같은 종류의 시계다.)

 

● This is the same watch that I lost.

(이것은 내가 잃어버린 바로 그 시계이다.)

 

③ the same as 다음에 낱말, 구, 절 등이 상관적으로 쓰이며 '~과 같은'의 뜻임.

● My opinion is the same as yours. (내 의견은 네 의견과 같다.)

 

● The price is the same as before the war. 

(물가는 전쟁 전과 같다.)

 

● They don't think the same as we do.

(그들은 우리처럼 생각하지 않는다.)

 

④ the same ~ where (when, who, as)

: the same은 that 이외의 관계대명사나 관계부사와도 같이 쓰입니다.

 

● Are these the same people who came here yesterday?

(이분들이 어제 여기 왔던 바로 그분들인가?)

 

⑤ all the same

: "아주 같은, 아무래도 좋은", "그래도 역시"의 뜻으로 쓰입니다.

 

●  A : You may stay here or go away. (당신은 여기 있어도 좋고, 떠나도 좋습니다.)

     B : º It is all the same to me. (저에게는 아무래도 좋습니다.)

         º If it is all the same to you. (만일 아무 상관이 없으시다면.)

 

● She has some defects, but I like her all the same.

(그녀는 다소 결점이 있지만, 그래도 역시 나는 그 여자를 좋아한다.)

 

● He is often rude, but I like him all the same.

(그는 자주 무례하지만, 그래도 역시 나는 그를 좋아한다.)
