형용사의 비교 : 비교급에 의한 비교에 대해 알아보기

오늘은 비교급에 의한 비교에 대해 알아보겠습니다. 비교급이란 형용사, 부사가 취하는 어형 변화의 하나입니다. 어떤 대상들을 비교할 때 성질이나 상태의 정도를 표시하는 것입니다. 원급보다는 더 심하고 최상급보다는 덜한 것을 말합니다.

 

 

우등비교

● Tom is two inches taller than Mary. (탐을 메리보다 2인치 더 키가 크다.)

 

● You are more beautiful than me. (너는 나보다 더 아름답다)

 

비교급 수식 : much, even, still, far, by far, a lot 등

: 비교급 앞에 위치해서 '훨씬 더욱'의 뜻.

 

● This is much bigger than that. (이것은 저것보다 훨씬 더 크다.)

 

● Tom drives far more carefully than Mary. (탐은 메리보다 훨씬 더 주의 깊게 운전한다.)

 

● You are even more beautiful than before.  ( 너는 전에 보다 훨씬 더 아름답다.)

 

 

the + 비교급 + 「of the two」 또는 「of A and B」 : '둘 중에서 더 ~한 것(사람)'

● He is the taller of the two boys. (그는 두 소년 중에서 키가 더 크다.)

 

● Jane is the younger of the two. (제인은 둘 중에 더 어리다.)

 

(all) the + 비교급 + because + 주어 + 동사 :'~ 때문에 ···하다'

= the + 비교급 + for + 명사(구) = the + 비교급 + as + 주어 + 동사  

 

● He worked the harder, because his master praised him.

(그의 주인이 그를 칭찬했지 때문에 그는 더 열심히 일했다.)

 

● I like him all the better for his faults.

(나는 그가 결점이 있지 때문에 그를 더욱더 좋아한다.)

 

● He is not the happier for all his wealth.

(그는 재산이 있다고 해서 더 행복하지 않다.)

 

the + 비교급 ~, the + 비교급 ···. = ~하면 할수록, 그만큼 ···하다.

● The more we have, the more we want.

(사람은 많이 가지면 가질수록 그만큼 더 원한다.)

 

● The sooner, the better. (빠르면 빠를수록 더 좋다.)

 

● The higher we climb, the colder it becomes.

(높이 올라가면 올라 갈수록 더 추워진다.)

 

<비교>

● Of gold and silver, the former is the more precious.

(금과 은 중에서 전자가 더 중요하다.)

→ of gold and silver라는 어구가 있으므로 정관사 the를 사용했습니다.

 

 

동일인, 동일물의 성질 비교 : -er를 쓰지 않고 more를 쓴다.

: 「more + 원급 + than ~」의 형식으로 나타냄.  *여기서 more는 rather의 뜻임.

 

● He is more clever than wise. (그는 현명하기보다 영리하다.)

 

● She is more shy than unsocial.

(그녀는 비사교적이라기보다는 오히려 수줍어하는 편이다.)

 

● It is more hot than warm. 

(날씨가 포근하기보다는 오히려 무더운 편이다.)

 

<비교>

● Tom is cleverer than Mary. (탐은 메리보다 영리하다)

 

than이하의 생략. : 비교의 대상이 생략되는 표현.

● I have never been happier. (than now).

(나는 지금 가장 행복하다.)

 

● Nothing can be simpler. (than this).

(이 이상 간단할 수 없다.)

 

절대비교급 : 비교의 대상이 없이 비교급을 쓰는 것.

● the younger generation = 젊은 세대.

● the higher (또는 upper) class = 상류 계급.

● the greater part of = ~의 대부분.

 

점층 비교급 : 정도가 점점 더해 가는 것을 나타낸다.

● The voice become fainter and fainter. (그 목소리는 점점 더 희미해졌다.)

 

●It's getting colder and colder. (날씨가 점점 더 추워지고 있다.)

 

A is no more B than C is B : A is not B any more than C is D

: A가 B가 아닌 것은 C가 D가 아닌 것과 같다.

 

● A whale is no more a fish than a horse is (a fish).

= A whale is not a fish any more than a horse is.

(고래가 물고기가 아닌 것은 말이 물고기가 아닌 것과 같다.)

 

no less A than B, not less A than B, no less A than

 

 

1. no less A than B : B와 마찬가지로 A이다.

● She is no less beautiful than her sisters.

= She is as beautiful as her sisters.

(그 여자는 그녀의 누이동생들과 마찬가지로 아름답다.)

 

2. not less A than B : 'B보다 덜 A 하지 않는다' 즉 'B 못지않게 A이다.'

● She is not less beautiful than her sisters.

= She is perhaps more beautiful than her sisters.

(그 여자는 그녀의 누이동생들 못지않게 아름답다.)

 

3. no less A than : '다름 아닌 바로 A'의 뜻.

● No less a statesman than Gladstone praised him.

(다름 아닌 바로 글래드스톤 같은 위대한 청치가가 그를 칭찬했다.)

 

not ~ than과 no ~ than

1. not + 비교급 + than ··· = ··· 보다 더 ~하지 않다.

● He is not taller than you. (그는 너보다 더 크지 않다.)

 

2. no + 비교급 + than ··· = as + 반대 뜻의 형용사 원급 + as

● He is no taller than you. (그는 너처럼 키가 작다.)

= He is as short as you.

 

still more와 still less

1. still more = much more : '더욱 ~하다', '~은 말할 것도 없이'의 뜻.

● He can speak French, still more English.

(그는 영어는 말할 것도 없이 불어도 할 수 있다.)

 

2. still less = much less : '더욱 ~하지 않다', '~은커녕, ~은 고사하고'

● He cannot speak English, still less French.

(그는 불어는커녕 영어도 할 수 없다.)

 

비교급의 관용적 용법.

 

 

1.no more than = only : ~에 지나지 않는, ~뿐 <적다는 느낌>

● I have saved no more than two hundred dollars.

(나는 단지 200달러 저금했다.)

 

2. no less than = as much as : ~만큼이나, ~와 같게 <많다는 느낌>

● I have saved no less than two hundred dollars.

(나는 200달러나 저금했다.)

 

3. not more than = at most : 많아봐야 ~인, ~보다 많지 않은.

● He paid not more than five hundred pounds for the used car.

(그는 그 중고차를 사는데 많아야 5백 파운드 지불했다.)

 

4. not less than = at least : 적어도.

● He paid not less than five hundred pounds for the used car.

(그는 그 중고차를 사는데 적어도 5백 파운드 지불했다.)
